To check if your hair needs protein or moisture, do this simple test:

  1. Take a hair strand that fell from your scalp naturally, and wrap it between your index fingers of each hand and pull your hands apart at a steady rate until it snaps.
  2. If the hair strand breaks without much stretching, you might have too much protein. In that case, you should go for a moisturizing hair mask.
  3. If the hair strand stretches about 30% and springs back again. This means that your hair is balanced between moisture and protein.
  4. If the hair strand stretches a lot, more than 50%. This means that your hair is craving protein. In this case, you should go for a protein hair mask.

There are other signs that might tell you that your hair is craving protein or moisture.

Signs that your hair is craving protein:

  • If your hair is stringy, limpy, or sticky.
  • If your hair breaks more easily.
  • If your hair is falling more than usual.
